· How has the service-learning experience changed my thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, myself and the community?
· What stands out as the best or worst thing that happened to you in your service learning experience? What did you learn from these experiences?
· Do you see yourself staying involved in the community during your college and adult years? Why or why not?
The Service Learning project has been a significant turning point in this phase of my life, exposing me to the problems and the demands of life form others. For our service learning, the class decided to contribute and assist the Down Syndrome Society (DSA), and through the whole planning process that I was involved in, I have learnt to manage my time more effectively, and to be more organized in planning large scale activities such as the Service Learning ventures down to the DSA complex itself, in our effort to sift and sort out the unwanted books. I have learnt to be more patient, and I consider myself and others extremely fortunate, and to appreciate the small commodities and luxuries that we enjoy in life, that may seem so small and insignificant, but may mean the world to someone else. I feel that giving back to society is something we must all do to support it, to make it a place where the less fortunate feel more welcome and that they can fit in, and through simple and little acts, we can make dreams come true.
We raised money in our school by selling ice-cream, so that we can donate to the DSA, and also to purchase a much needed television monitor for their thrift shop. Planning was enjoyable, as we got to work together as the planning committee, to liaise with the staff of the DSA to provide our proposals, and to keep in mind that the cogs that we are putting in motion can change others' lives.
I feel that contributing back to the community and society does not and must not stop at one stage, as the more we put back into society, the more society will give to us. Helping others is one of the imperative and prominent virtues in life, and it all starts with a simple act of kindness, and since now that we have attained the skills to properly give back to the community, we should not let said knowledge go to waste, instead strive to use it to the best of our ability, in the present and the upcoming future.
